Last-Minute, High-Tech Mother’s Day Gifts

Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 12. A decade ago that would have been cause for panic, with just one shopping day left. In this era of next-day, same-day and even one-hour delivery for online shoppers, there’s still time to get mom a great gift. Here are five ideas for mothers whose preferences lean more toward tech than flowers. I have tested each of these and most have been reviewed here, on Forbes.

Last-Minute, High-Tech Mother’s Day Gifts: Nixplay Iris Wi-Fi Digital Photo Frame

Mothers Day Gift Guide

The Nixplay Iris does a great job of displaying digital photos, while looking like an actual picture frame instead of a tablet.

BRAD MOON

A nice mix of traditional and high-tech, the Nixplay Iris (reviewed here) is a digital photo frame that uses a Wi-Fi connection to upload photos and short movie clips.

Some digital photo frames can look like plastic tablets, but the $179.99 Nixplay Iris does a great job of posing as an ordinary picture frame. It comes in a choice of three metallic finishes, and shows the digital images on an 8-inch display with 1024 x 768 resolution. From a few feet away, the images look just like photo prints. With its Wi-Fi connection, family members can upload photos to share, no matter how far away they might live.

Last-Minute, High-Tech Mother’s Day Gifts: Denon DP-450USB Turntable

Mothers Day Gift Guide

Denon’s DP-450USB turntable is an elegant and great-sounding option for vinyl lovers.

MOTHERS DAY GIFT GUIDE

Record players and turntables make great gifts, and there are many moms out there who love listening to music. The $599 Denon DP-450USB(review coming soon) is a great choice as a turntable. This one is slim and sleek with a compact, minimalist look. A built-in preamplifier means it can be connected to the PHONO input of an amplifier, or to the AUX input of virtually any sound system or portable speaker.

The Denon DP-450USB also has a built-in USB port with record buttons, so tracks can be easily captured as MP3 or WAV files without having to fuss with a PC or audio capture software.

If mom already owns a turntable, consider a membership to Vinyl Me, Please. This modern take on a record-of-the-month club offers a unique selection of choices to fit any musical taste. It also features colorful limited-edition pressings like the one shown on the Denon turntable.

Last-Minute, High-Tech Mother’s Day Gifts: Brydge iPad Keyboard

Mothers Day Gift Guide

This Bridge Bluetooth keyboard turns an iPad Pro into a mini MacBook.

BRAD MOON

After a long day of work, and then dealing with three kids, my wife likes nothing better than to relax on the couch for an hour in the evening to scan the news and check out her social media accounts. She loves her iPad Pro for size, but prefers a laptop form factor for typing comments and to prop the display up for watching video.

A Bluetooth keyboard cover from Brydge is the perfect solution. Brydge makes these from anodized aluminum in the same colors as Apple’s iPads. The version I tested earlier this year fit a 10.5-inch iPad Pro perfectly and for $129.99 turned it into a mini version of a MacBook – complete with keyboard backlighting.

Last-Minute, High-Tech Mother’s Day Gifts: Jaybird Run XT Wireless Earbuds

Mothers Day Gift Guide

Jaybird RUN XT wireless earbuds sound great, fit great and have no fear of sweat or rain.

BRAD MOON

Wireless earbuds are a hot item, led by Apple AirPods. These are fine for casual use, but if mom likes a little more depth to her music, or plans to wear buds while exercising then there is a much better choice.

Jaybird’s second generation RUN XT wireless earbuds get up to four hours per charge (a total of 12 hours including the charge case) and they support both Siri and Google Assistant — although not hands-free, a button must be tapped to invoke a digital assistant.

However the $179.99 Jaybird RUN XTs have three big advantages over most wireless earbuds. Thanks to Jaybird’s proprietary, interchangeable gel tips and ear wings, the RUN XTs lead the class in fit comfort and security. Audio performance runs circles around AirPods and can be customized with Jaybird’s mobile app. And the RUN XT’s are not only sweatproof and rainproof, they have an IPX7 rating that means they can survive being submerged in water (yes, I’ve tried it and they were fine).

Last-Minute, High-Tech Mother’s Day Gifts: Kobo Forma E-Reader

Mothers Day Gift Guide

The Kobo Forma is an elegantly thin and light e-reader, with a big and beautiful display.

BRAD MOON

Anyone who really loves to read will appreciate the gift of a Kobo Forma. This $279.99 premium e-reader was one of my first reviews of 2019 and it continues to impress.

It’s thin and light, with a curved grip on one side that makes it easy to hold. Turn pages using touch or with the physical buttons. Borrow books from the library right on the device with its built-in OverDrive support. And its high resolution 8-inch display is the largest available, making for a no-compromise reading experience.

The Forma is also IPX8 water resistant and equipped with Kobo’s ComfortLight PRO with adjustable color temperature. That means mom can enjoy her favorite novels in the bath, by the pool or on the beach — in the bright sun or with just a candle burning.
